Smoking Survey

Andy Lord, Branch Secretary

Dear Colleagues

This is a brief note to let you know that PCS Safety Reps will be joining with management to do a short survey on smoking outside Alexander House.

As you know there has been for some time a serious issue with respect to smoke drifting back into the building and causing Health issues for staff working on the Ground floor primarily in the Enquiry Centre,.

Accordingly we have agreed to work with management to help them resolve the issue. As a first step a survey will be attempting to gather some high level statistical evidence on whether the problem is being caused by HMRC staff exercising their legitimate right to smoke outside the building and off HMRC premises or whether the problem is being caused by others outside HMRC.

The purpose of the survey is not to
    • Identify who is smoking outside the building – i.e. names will not be taken or recorded
    • Identify how long any individual is spending smoking
    • Identify any breaches of HMRC policy on smoking

This evidence gathered will be used to inform a discussion about problems with the fabric of the building (i.e. why are smoke and other irritants are able to enter the building) and it is hoped help progress an initiative to provide a suitable location for smokers within the  boundary of the Alexander House Estate.
