The cabinet office Minister, Francis Maude, announced this morning the government’s intentions in relation to the civil service compensation scheme (CSCS). Clearly the announcements, including threats that redundancy payments are to be capped at one year’s salary are already causing a high degree of concern amongst members, and represent an outrageous attack on all civil servants.
PCS nationally have already responded, indicating that the proposals are quite clearly an initial attempt to prepare for massive job cuts on the cheap.
Colleagues will be aware that the cabinet office announcements coincided with HMRC intranet messages from CEO Lesley Strathie, including a letter from Francis Maude and a Q & A. A version of these messages appeared on all departmental intranets around lunchtime on the 6th.
Negotiations on the CSCS are being handled by the national union, and further, detailed briefings will be posted on the PCS website in due course. Further group specific briefings will be issued as appropriate, but in short it is clear that the attack on civil service jobs and services has began in earnest, and both the NEC and GEC will take stock of developments and co-ordinate an appropriate response.
